Quizzing in India differs from quizzing in the United States and the United Kingdom in that it is diversified, with several genres catering to various geographical regions, age groups, and hobbies.
In 1967, Neil O'Brien held the first documented, official quiz in Calcutta's Christ the King Church Parish Hall (now Kolkata). O'Brien, who had recently returned from England and had been exposed to pub quiz culture there, introduced quizzing to the Anglo-Indian community first, before spreading to a wider audience. O'Brien continued to participate in quizzes, eventually presenting popular quiz show broadcasts such as "North Star Quiz."
Bournvita Quiz Contest, a quiz show for high school students, debuted on radio in India on April 12, 1972, and quickly became one of the most popular programmes in the country. The show's original quizmasters were Hamid Sayani and his brother Ameen. It lasted over a decade until being resurrected as a television quiz show in the late 1990s. Quiz Time, which debuted in 1985, was the first quiz show to achieve national popularity.Quizmaster Siddhartha Basu is credited with popularising quizzing in India, dubbed the "grandfather of the quiz game in India". Basu went on to host additional series, such as India Quiz, in the future. In the year 2000, the Kaun Banega Crorepati quiz, based on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, reignited interest in quizzes across the country, becoming one of the most popular quiz shows of all time.
