 When Murugan died in Amsterdam in 2003, it was an end to a remarkable chapter in Indian diplomacy. In the first decade and a half after Independence, India sent numerous individuals like Murugan to dozens of countries.


Although today less remembered than a similar exercise that China does, it was extremely popular. Several children would even write directly to Jawaharlal Nehru, hoping to get this done.
