A quiz is a type of game or mental sport in which competitors strive to properly answer questions about a specific or a variety of topics. Quizzes can be used as a quick assessment tool in education and other industries to track knowledge, talents, and skills progress. They can also be shown on television for entertainment reasons, usually in the style of a game show.
The word's origins may be traced back to 1780; its derivation is uncertain, but it is thought to have originated in student slang. It was first used to describe a "odd, quirky person"[a] or a "joke, prank." Later, it developed to signify "to examine, study intently" (perhaps as a result of association with words like "inquisitive"), and then (from about mid-19th century) a test or exam.
The word quiz is the subject of a well-known urban legend that claims that in 1791, a Dublin theatre owner named Richard Daly wagered that he could introduce a word into the language in under 24 hours. He then recruited a group of homeless youngsters to scribble the word "quiz," which was a meaningless word, on walls throughout Dublin. The word had gained currency and a meaning within a day (since no one knew what it meant, everyone assumed it was a test), and Daly had some additional cash in his pocket. There is no evidence to back up the storey, and the term was in use prior to the alleged bet in 1791.
